About the bands

Small Group Instruction

This year, small group instruction will be centered around our solo and ensemble unit.  Each student will prepare a solo, and small group instructors will be in during the months of January and February to help prepare students for their solo performance.

Cardinal Band

As the entry-level band for incoming 9th-grade wind, brass, and percussion musicians, the Cardinal Band is a performing ensemble with a curriculum designed to promote individual musical growth and improved technical skills. Students will meet in a fun, fast-paced rehearsal and also receive more personalized attention in weekly small-group instruction. Cardinal Band members are eligible for participation in festivals, concert field trips, marching band, pep band, and jazz ensembles. Three evening concerts presented to the public culminate study units. Certain school instruments are available for student rental for a maintenance fee of $50.00 per year.

Note: Possession of a well-maintained instrument is recommended, however, some large instruments are available through the school - see your instructor for additional information.

Mr. Brown, Mr. Ver Voort, and Mr. Rothacker work with the 9th graders in addition to many upperclassman tutors.

Concert Band

The Concert Band is designed for 10th and 11th graders who are ready to study and learn challenging repertoire. Advanced concepts of phrasing, musical precision, and interpretation will be stressed. Though concert repertoire remains at the core of the curriculum, Concert Band members have the opportunity to explore jazz, chamber music, and marching band. Student learning is personalized and assessed in small group instruction. Activities include performances at music festivals, eligibility for solo/ensemble performances, and regular public performances.  Expectations beyond the classroom include evening events throughout the year including concerts and community service performances. Certain school instruments are available for student rental for a maintenance fee of $50.00 per year.

Note: Possession of a well-maintained instrument is recommended, however, some large instruments are available through the school - see your instructor for additional information. Private lessons are encouraged.

Marching Band

The MHS Cardinal Marching Band is made up of students in grades 9-12 by registration in the Spring. In addition to a summer "band camp" just before school starts, the band rehearses during ASR periods in the days before our competition. Each year, the band performs at the Good Neighbor Festival and Homecoming parades, at home football games, marching competitions, and at Memorial Day observances in Ashton and Cross Plains.

Pep Band

The MHS Cardinal Crew, or Pep Band, will play at a number of games for girls and boys sports this year. Each band student is required to sign up for several performances from November through March, though many students elect to attend additional games for fun and additional points toward band awards.

Jazz Band

All band students are eligible to audition for Jazz Ensemble. The audition material has been available all summer, and auditions will be September 2019. The two major performances include the Jazz Cabaret at Union South in January and the Jazz Tracs Concert at Middleton High School PAC in May.
